YEAR 1

Welcome to a new school year! The Year 1’s have made a wonderful start in their class. They have settled well into routines and are excited to be learning new skills. Please ensure your child brings to school daily their reader bag and hat, and also a box of tissues for your class, if you haven’t already sent one. Homework needs to be completed and handed in on Fridays. A book is assigned every week on “Reading Eggs” which has to be read and the quiz completed along with a spelling activity. Please ensure that your child completes this, as the assignment expires after a week. Assigned Mathletics tasks also have to be completed every week.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING:

Reading/Writing: Our focus for writing this term is “Descriptions”. We have been describing “Our classroom”. I would greatly appreciate if you could practise writing descriptions at home too on any topic. In Grammar, students have been learning about nouns and compound nouns.

Maths: In Maths, we have been looking at skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and also place value (tens and ones).

Integrated Studies: The differences in family structures and roles today, and how these have changed or remained the same over time.

Electives: As part of the Electives curriculum, students will be involved in either “Cooking classes” or “Puppet and Mask Making” for this term. In the cooking class, there are all sorts of things students will learn, including:

During our lessons, the students will also learn about kitchen safety, food handling, healthy eating, nutrition and learn how to correctly measure different types of ingredients. The students will get the opportunity to make different foods from different cultures and eat their food at the end of the lesson.

Children will make their own masks/puppets with easy step-by-step instructions and enjoy using their imaginations during puppet play. The elective will give the children the opportunity to make rubber glove finger puppets, paddle pop stick puppets, cardboard roll puppets, animal felt puppets and much more.

Looking forward to a wonderful term ahead!
